RE: Satellite Cable Connections on TT.

DSS--Digital Satellite Service. At least that's what I've always figured it was but I never saw it written anywhere. Anyway, I tried hooking the satellite dish to the DSS junction outside and then had another RG digital cable to go from the inside DSS box to the satellite "in" connection on the receiver. Then another digital cable from the receiver to the TV. I got to the point where I had the Directv listings page come up but I couldn't choose and receive a channel. I called Directv and they told me that something isn't hooked up correctly. I have other things I can try but I thought I'd take a shortcut and maybe get some info from someone who had, and solved the same problem.

Satellite Cable Connections on TT.

My TT has three junction boxes for cable connections on the outside of the unit. One is a telephone connection and the other two have coax connectors. One of the coax connectors is marked "DSS". Is the "DSS" connection for satellite hookup? I've tried to hook up a satellite dish using the "DSS" connection but couldn't get it to work. I'm going to try to hook up the dish directly to the receiver and bypass the outside connections to see if that works. Any suggestions from those with experience would be appreciated.

RE: Federal Land Grab

My "dog in this fight" is the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Surf fishing is my thing and I need to drive on the beach to get to the best fishing spots. Audubon, the Defenders of Wildlife and the Southern Environmental Law Council are trying to turn the place into a bird sanctuary AND they have the backing of the National Park Service! There's room for both the birds and the vehicles but the Greenies don't see it that way. They want to shut the place down and they're winning! "Green" is going too far and this stuff has got to stop. Under the new, incoming administration, things ain't lookin' so good!

RE: Slide Toppers: Fix or Remove?

Mile High....If careFree doesn't make that topper anymore, that is a shame! I keep reading about problems people have with their toppers and I just shake my head and think that "ya got the wrong kind of topper!" The CareFree topper is/was waaaaaaaay better than the ones that extend with the slide. I tried this once before and it didn't work but I'm going to try to post a pic of mine again. Standby

RE: Slide Toppers: Fix or Remove?

IMHO the toppers that extend and retract along with the slide are a waste of time. The first time I took my Prowler TT to the beach, I thought for sure the topper was going to be torn off by the wind. I thought at that time what a silly system this was that you can't decide NOT to extend the topper. Again, IMHO, if you camp in places with trees around, with a topper in place, it's great not having to deal with the junk that accumulates on top of the slide. So one day I was at a campground and saw a unit that had a CareFree topper installed. Works just like the awning on the front side of your unit. You either extend it or you don't. At the beach I don't extend it, in the woods I do. The CareFree also has two additional benefits. First it actually extends OVER to edge of the slide so it becomes a window awning as well as a topper. That helps keep the inside of the unit cool. Second is that it looks great. Sort of adds a fishished look to the unit. When the fabric wears out on my CareFree, you can be sure I'll be replacing it!

RE: Disappointing WDW Campsite

Write to the Mouse and complain! Disney is VERY responsive to visitor comments. Lightload, Do you, or anyone else, have an e-mail address for someone other than a "cast member" that might have some clout with a complaint? There's nothing I can find in the "Contact Us" section of the WDW website. Thanks. The letter I wrote was sent via snail mail. I just checked it but the inside address on my copy was not specific so I can't help you. An address, either email or snail mail should be easy enough to get though. Just call any Disney number and ask for Customer Relations. They will be able to give you any address you need.

RE: Disappointing WDW Campsite

Different strokes for different folks! Personally, I like the sound of frogs! To me it's a very soothing, natural sound. One of the problems I encountered on my "bad" FW trip involved, to some degree, the garbage cans. We had a terrible, terrible time checking in to the campground, then after being assigned a site, there was a guy ahead of us trying to back into his site and he was totally clueless! He fooled around for close to an hour trying to back in (and not hit a garbage can)all the while his wife and son-in-law were screaming directions to him. Eventually the son-in-law took over and while he wasn't much better, he did get the unit on the site. In the meantime, there was a long line of rigs, including me, waiting to get by. We've camped at FW at least a dozen times and the garbage cans have really never been a problem for me. Where I have the difficulty is the way some people park their tow vehicles. They get as close to the road as they can to give themselves more room on the site which takes away room for people trying to back up their rigs.

RE: Champion Generator Observation

It's all relative...... I had a Honda to the left of me and a Yamaha to the right of me. The Honda ran for most of the day and the Yamaha ran all day every day. Even at a low level, that much run time is a pain in the butt. My Champion ran for about an hour every two or three days and yeah, it's louder but with so little run time, I have to believe that the Champion was less obnoxious than the Honda/Yamaha. Yes. With a schedule like that, I would much rather listen to your Champion. That's what the Champion next to me was doing, so it was not too bad. It's the constant day in and day out running that becomes too much. BTW, what is the 12 volt output of a Champion into, say, a pair of golf cart batts run half way down? Sometimes, it seems that everyone runs their gens for breakfast coffee and toast, charges a little and then shuts down. During that period, I sometimes fire up our Kohler Klanker for a little undetected microwave or toaster oven activity. . Dunno what the actual output to the batteries is. I have a pair of golf cart batteries on the front and a 130 watt solar panel on the roof. I ran the genset because of a couple days of rainy weather. My solar regulator doesn't tell me battery voltage so I have to go by the in-house monitor panel. The panel never said anything but full charge but I ran the genset while I was taking showers and running the furnace a bit just to be on the safe side. I just plug the genset into the camper so the charge current is actually passing through my converter.

RE: Disappointing WDW Campsite

Write to the Mouse and complain! Disney is VERY responsive to visitor comments. We've made lots of trips to FW and always stay in the 300,400 or 500 loops. These are the preferred sites and are within easy walking distance of the boat launch and main bus stop. If you stay farther out, it usually takes two bus rides to get where you're going instead of one. That's a lot of time spent sitting on a bus instead of enjoying the parks activities. One year, Disney screwed up and we ended up in a site right across from the Meadows Trading Post. It was great fun listening to the back-up alarms on the delivery trucks as they were making their 2am deliveries! The park was full so there was no place else to go. There were a lot of screw-ups on that trip. Some were Disney's fault and some were not but all told, Papa was not a happy camper. Mickey got a letter after that trip and I got a phone call from Customer Relations to discuss my problems. Disney made it right.

RE: Champion Generator Observation

It's all relative...... I recently spent 10 days at a NPS campground in Maryland. Where my site was located, I had a Honda to the left of me and a Yamaha to the right of me. On the starting issue with the Champion, I am always amazed at how easy the unit starts. Never a second pull required.

Same here. I've tried accessing the board thru both AOL and Internet Explorer and I'm still getting blank pages a lot of the time.

RE: "wallydocking" At Cabelas in Hamburg Pa?

I don't live too far from the Hamburg Cabela's and when I was there last summer, I asked the manager about camping in their lot. The response was sure, no problem. Then he went on to say that I should park over on the right side of the lot(when facing the front of the store). If you park over on the left side, sometimes the township police will roust you out. The dump station, etc. is over on the left side but if you're going to spend the night, park over on the right side.

RE: Source of odor in TT found!!!!!

I’m not sure why someone is so upset you tossed it out, if it was whatever hazard they think it is the bottle would say exactly how to expose of it. That said, I would have plugged it into a lantern and ran it dry. But I didn't know where it was leaking from! Was it coming out of the threaded connection or the fill junction? I was concerned that a spark in the wrong area would produce a mini blowtorch. Dunno. Let the bashing continue but just where the he!! are you supposed to store these things that doesn't pose a problem? There are light switches (read that sparks) and other electrical connections all over my TT, including the storage spaces! And while the bottle had SOME gas remaining, it was very little. I shook it and felt nothing moving inside. Then the bottle sat outside on the picnic table for a day before going into the dumpster. Any danger that bottle presented was VERY minimal! As far as recycling goes, I know of no program in PA or MD for that matter that deals with small propane cylinders. In California.... you know, the place where "this product is known to produce cancer in the state of California" is so prevalent, propane bottle recycling centers may be everywhere but they are not prevalent in my area. I started this post so that other folks could learn from my experience. I trust that I've been successful in that endeavor but I wasn't expecting the rest of the BS. So lighten up already! I've learned not to trust the integrity of those bottles! Lesson learned....nuf said.

RE: Source of odor in TT found!!!!!

Might be time to check the LP detector to find out why it didn't sound the alarm. Just a thought. The blown fuse that I was looking for turned out to be the one that powered the leak detector. Except for the first two days of my Assateague trip, the camper was not being used. We noticed the smell when moving things in/out of the camper getting ready for the next trip. What I think happened was that the gas alarm did go off but with no one in the unit to hear it, the alarm sounded until the fuse popped.

RE: Source of odor in TT found!!!!!

It was an Ozark Trails(Walmart)brand bottle. I'm really not sure if it was a brand new bottle or had been previously used. I've never had one leak on me before but I certainly learned a lesson with this one.

Source of odor in TT found!!!!!

Out of desparation I posted a request on this forum for ideas on the possible source of a foul odor which seemed to be originating from one of the kitchen cabinets. The source has been found and I felt the situation and it's remedy are interesting enough to report here for the benefit of other readers. For the last six/eight weeks there's been a nasty odor coming from one of the tall cabinets in our TT. My wife pulled everything out of the cabinet looking for a dead mouse or a rotten potatoe but found nothing. On election day, I took the TT to Assateague Island, MD for a twelve day fishing trip. The first several days of the trip were notable in that the weather was terrible with high winds and rain which kept me in the trailer. With time on my hands, I decided to search for the source of the smell. There was also an electrical problem which I felt had to be a blown fuse. I pulled everyting out of the cabinet.....AGAIN.... and found nothing. I was thinking that the problem had to be a dead mouse that died between the double walls of the cabinet so I was actually looking for the easiest way to dismantle the interior walls to search for the offending culprit. Not relishing the thought of tearing the walls apart, I turned my attention to the fuse. I got down on the floor to get a good look at the fuse panel and as I got close to the panel, I caught a whiff of the odor. I had piled some of the cabinet contents on the floor and the only items that were in close proximity to the fuse panel were a couple of bottles of propane. I picked up the first bottle and gave it a whiff....nothing. I picked up the second bottle and BULLSEYE! I had the source of the odor! A slowly leaking one pound bottle of propane was the culprit! The propane bottle was tossed in the dumpster and the problem was solved. And I slept better that night!

Bad Odor in Travel Trailer.

About a month ago, we noticed a bad smell coming from one of the cabinets in our TT. It smelled like something dead or a rotten potato maybe. To cut immediately to the chase, we have completely emptied all the cupboards near the "offending" area and cannot find the source of the odor. There is a space under the cabinets that houses the water heater, the converter and the electrical distribution panel. I've checked everywhere and I can't find the problem. The black and grey water vent pipes are on the other side of the trailer so I don't see them being involved. Besides, it's not a sewage kind of smell anyway. I also sprayed some Fabreze in there to try to kill the smell but that did nothing. It's not like the smell is overpowering, in fact if the doors and windows are open you can't even notice it. But after the rig is closed up for awhile when you walk in, it's very noticeable. I've explored everything I can think of. Anyone have any ideas? Lightload
